'Hung' Surpasses 'Sopranos,' 'Six Feet Under'
Most watched freshman drama in HBO history
Critics might not be totally on board with Thomas Jane's new HBO series, but viewers seem to be.
"Hung" has earned the title of HBO's most-watched new series of all time, it's 9 million average viewers per episode putting it ahead of perennial classics like "The Sopranos," "The Wire" and "Oz."
However, "Hung" had something the other shows didn't really have -- a vast number of ways for people to watch the show.
"Hung" attracted 2.9 million viewers to its Sept. 13 finale, well below the 5.1 million that showed up to watch the finale of "True Blood" an hour earlier.
But when HBO counts in all the people who watched "Hung" on-demand, or on their DVR, or another avenue, the viewership numbers triple, according to Broadcasting & Cable.
Taking that same test, that moves "True Blood" to 12 million viewers, still beating "Hung," but not able to claim the record because it's in its second year.
"True Blood" has become a new hit for HBO. Its first season finale drew just 2.5 million viewers, and the second season peaked at 5.3 million viewers, which means that like "The Sopranos" and "Six Feet Under" of old, HBO can expect more people calling up their cable companies to order the premium channel.
