'The Beautiful Life' Becomes Fall's First Casualty

The CW couldn't seem to pull Ashton Kutcher's latest off the air fast enough

Even for The CW, "The Beautiful Life" was not pretty at all.

The network gave the series from executive producer Ashton Kutcher exactly two weeks to prove itself, deciding after all that a show about models living in New York City could've been cast with mannequins instead, and still no one would've watched.

Because of that, "The Beautiful Life" is, well, dead.

"The Beautiful Life" was supposed to be a perfect lead-out from "America's Next Top Model," especially since those tuning in to see real-life would-be models would surely be interested in fictional, over-the-top ones, right?

Not exactly. "Beautiful Life" premiered with an abysmal 1.1 rating/2 share, according to Fast National ratings from The Nielsen Co. on Sept. 16, just a little more than half the audience that watched "Top Model" the hour before.

Then in its second week, ratings plummeted 27 percent to a 0.8/1, and The CW decided it was time for the show to go.

Since The CW has nothing prepped and ready to go in its place, the network will instead air encore episodes of "Melrose Place," according to the Los Angeles Times, as a way to try and boost that show's ratings, which also has struggled out the gate. That show, based on a remake of the early 1990s show that previously aired on Fox, is averaging a 1.4/2 after three episodes, nearly 18 percent less than its "90210" lead-in.

The 0.8/1 is the worst audience for a new episode that has tuned into a The CW show since the now-canceled "Privilege" picked up a few 1.1/2s last season.
