ABC Wins First Week Of New Season

As expected, however, NBC struggling to attract any viewers, even with Leno

The first official week of the 2009-10 television season doesn't go to CBS, although they weren't too far behind, but instead to ABC.

The Disney-owned network earned an 8.8 rating/14 share based on averages of new non-news programming on the network for the week, thanks to a big healthy dose of "Dancing With the Stars." That was enough to beat the solid 7.6/12 picked up by CBS at the same time, powered by a double-dose of NCIS.

Two shows dominated ABC's top five for the week, "Dancing" and the two-part season premiere of "Grey's Anatomy," which combined, averaged an 11.0/17. CBS, on the other hand, had both "NCIS: Los Angeles" and "NCIS" at the top of its week, followed by "CSI," "Criminal Minds" and the series premiere of "The Good Wife." Those five shows combined for a 10.0/16, an entire ratings point below ABC's top shows.

A highlight of CBS' schedule was "Survivor," which actually grew its week-over-week audience, likely because of interest in Russell Hantz, who is trying to become the reality show's most prolific villain. "Survivor" earned a 6.9/11 Thursday night, according to Zap2it, a 3 percent growth over the previous week, when other shows past their premieres elsewhere on the dial dropped in audience.

Fox finished a distant third with a 4.5/7, not helped at all by its Friday night lineup that averaged a 1.7/3 between two episodes of the new series "Brothers" and the second season premiere of "Dollhouse." Without those three shows, Fox would've averaged an entire ratings point higher, but still wouldn't have been enough to overtake CBS for the third slot.

"House" was the big winner for Fox, averaging a 9.5/14 and finishing eighth among the 10 highest-rated shows of the week. The top three shows overall were the premiere of ABC's "Dancing With the Stars" with an 11.3/17, "NCIS: Los Angeles" on CBS with an 11.1/17, and another installment of "Dancing" with an 11.0/17.

NBC is already fading following a strong first week by "The Jay Leno Show" as part of its 10 p.m. experiment. "Leno" dropped 46 percent on average from its first week to pick up just a 4.0/7 after five days compared to a 7.4/13 the week before, and the Peacock managed only a 4.1/7 for the week.

After three weeks -- including a couple unofficial weeks of the season -- ABC is leading the overall pack with an 8.8/14 average, according to research by the BlipNetwork. CBS is second with a 7.2/12, while NBC, thanks to some early strong returns from Jay Leno's first week, has a 5.0/8. Fox is fourth overall with a 4.5/7 while The CW has the rear with a 1.8/3.
