CBS Wins Week Behind Strong 'NCIS' Outing

Fox, on the other hand, see Friday pull its ratings way down

After ABC clinched the first week of the season without a doubt thanks to its continue competition pounding through "Dancing With the Stars," CBS bounced back and was able to win the second official week of the 2009-10 season, in a review of overnight ratings for non-event programming.

CBS earned a 7.3 rating/12 share for the week, according to the average Fast National ratings from The Nielsen Co. for the week beginning Sept. 27, easily beating the 6.8/11 from ABC.

CBS did it with "NCIS," which earned the best numbers for any show so far this season with a 12.5/20 Tuesday, according to Zap2it, nearly 17 percent better than its season premiere numbers. The overall lineup for CBS stayed solid all week long as well with only three shows finishing below a 5.0 household rating -- "Ghost Whisperer," "The New Adventures of Old Christine" and "Gary Unmarried," which averaged a decent 4.7/8 between the three of them.

ABC, which had won the previous week with an 8.8/14, also only had three programs below the 5.0 household -- "Extreme Makeover," "Eastwick" and "Shark Tank." However, because of the 3.5/6 earned by "Shark Tank," those three programs averaged a 4.1/7, pretty much the difference between the two networks' gap this week.

The Disney-owned network got its best numbers, again, from "Dancing," which had two episodes average a 10.9/17, and also got a boost from "Grey's Anatomy," which picked up a 9.8/15 to finish in sixth place for the week.

CBS, however, had seven of the top 10 shows (no other network broke into it), led by "NCIS" and followed by "NCIS: Los Angeles," "The Mentalist," "CSI," "The Good Wife," "CSI: Miami" and "Criminal Minds."

NBC had yet another bad week, getting absolutely no help from "The Jay Leno Show" which lost another 5 percent of its audience week over week, and nearly 49 percent since its opening week.

The rest of NBC's schedule wasn't much better. It's highest ratings came from "The Biggest Loser," which averaged a 5.6/9. Only three shows finished above a 5.0 household for NBC, two of them being the reality show and the third "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit." Its comedy blocks are averaging a 3.2/5, just worse than "Jay Leno," which averaged a 3.8/6.

That was just enough, however, to beat Fox for the week. Fox struggled significantly with "Dollhouse" on Fridays, which earned a very The CW-like 1.4/2 to pick up one of the worst ratings of the week, including what The CW posted. Three of Fox's programs finished below the 2.0 household, in fact, adding "Brothers" and "Til Death" to the mix -- all of which air on Fridays.

That gave Fox a 4.1/7 for the week, compared to the 4.2/7 NBC picked up. If Fox removed its Friday lineup from the equation, it would have earned a 4.8/8, meaning Fridays are pulling Fox's ratings down by more than 14 percent.

CBS had two of the week's three hottest shows, with huge audience improvements for "Survivor" and "The Mentalist" on Thursdays. "Survivor," thanks to a villain that is getting a lot of watercooler buzz, continues to climb in the ratings week after week. It started with a 6.7/11 for its premiere, moved up to a 6.9/11 the following week, and this past outing earned a 7.1/12, marking its third straight increase.

That helped to give a small boost to the rest of CBS' Thursday lineup, including a small bump for "CSI" and a big jump for "The Mentalist," which grew its premiere audience by nearly 8 percent in one week.

The other hot show was "America's Next Top Model" on The CW, which jumped 21 percent in just one week to earn a 2.3/4, matching the first hour of its season premiere. It also took the title of top-rated program on freshman series "The Vampire Diaries," which finished the week with a 2.2/4.

On the cold side, ABC had three entries, including the results show of "Dancing With the Stars," which lost more than 22 percent of its audience week over week, and not helping another series that went cold, "The Forgotten," which lost 19 percent of its viewers.

Also finishing cold was "Eastwick" on ABC, which shrunk its audience from its series premiere by more than 21 percent, and even losing more from its "Cougar Town" lead-in.

One other show going cold was "Melrose Place" on The CW, despite a small boost from its previous week, is finishing well below expectations for The CW, and is now the network's lowest-rated program since "The Beautiful Life" was already bumped from the air.
