Two Networks Street Brawling For 'Southland'

New home for series dumped by NBC is still looking like TNT, however

When NBC decided to fill its 10 p.m. timeslot every night with Jay Leno, many fans of freshman cop drama "Southland" saw the writing on the wall.

Although the network maintained it would keep the show on the air despite the schedule change, the inevitable finally happened, and "Southland" was pronounced DOA.

But that death is only from NBC's perspective. Executive Producer John Wells tells The Hollywood Reporter that not one network, but in fact, two networks are interested in the series, despite its weak first-season ratings, and it's very likely the show will return to television very soon.

The one cable channel apparently deep in the running is TNT, which is under the same corporate umbrella as "Southland's" studio, Warner Bros. Television. Although Wells wouldn't share who exactly wants to pick up the show, if TNT were to get it, they would likely repackage the short first-season order and the episodes already produced for the second season to make a new first season that would introduce "Southland" to cable audiences.

That means production wouldn't resume for months at least, as a cable channel likely wouldn't include "Southland" until its spring rotation.

Southland premiered April 9 with a 6.2 rating/11 share, according to Fast National ratings from The Nielsen Co., and while it maintained its audience for the second week, started to slip around Easter time, hitting a low of 3.0/5 on May 14.

However, NBC expressed confidence in the series, and it bounced back with a 4.2/8 in its season finale. And even with that audience level, it would've been NBC's seventh highest-rated show last week behind the two Law & Order series, two hours of "The Biggest Loser," "The Office" and "Mercy."

However, the content of the show made it almost impossible for NBC to air it before 10, and with no other room in its primetime schedule because of "The Jay Leno Show," NBC decided to yank "Southland" instead.
