'Glee' Cast Wins Diversity Award, Goes Gold
Lots of accolades for a show that is not even the top of Fox's ratings list
Ryan Murphy will have to figure out which one will have a more prominent place on his mantle: the fact that a "Glee" single has gone gold, or the diversity award he's about to receive for having probably the most hodgepodge cast ever on a non-reality television show.
"Glee" will be honored by with a Diversity Award later this month for its inclusion of a wide away of characters including a gay student, a pair of Asians, African-American characters, and a boy in a wheelchair. That doesn't even include the Jewish singing sensation with two gay dads as well as a student who seeks out cougars (OK, that one probably isn't part of the award).
"The bunch are determined to overcome the odds and make it to the big time both in high school and the world beyond," the Diversity Awards executive committee said in a statement, according to Reuters.
Also set to be honored is Justin Chon from "Twilight," and both Hope Olaide Wilson and Taraji P. Henson of the Tyler Perry film "I Can Do Bad All By Myself."
The awards are set to be given Nov. 22.
"Glee" also has received an honor from the music industry as its remake of Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'" was certified Gold, meaning it has sold 500,000 copies -- almost all through digital downloads. Even more amazing, songs from the "Glee" cast have now sold more than 2 million copies online, with seven songs occupying the top 200 of iTunes' Top Songs chart, according to Newsweek.
The musical comedy, which stars the likes of Matthew Morrison, Lea Michele, Cory Monteith and Jane Lynch, has averaged a 4.4 rating/7 share over seven episodes on Fox Wednesday nights, comfortably ahead of its "So You Think You Can Dance" lead-in. While "Glee" might not have huge numbers for Fox, it does have a very stable audience, counting 95.7 percent of its total audience as addicts, according to the BlipNetwork's Audience Loyalty Index. (What Is ALI?)
"Glee" airs Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET on Fox.
