First Week Of Sweeps Goes To CBS

ABC shows strength with 'V' premiere

CBS has been dominating ratings so far this season (although ABC hasn't been too far behind), and that superiority carried over into the first week of sweeps.

The big eye earned a 7.0 rating/11 share in average overnights from The Nielsen Co. during the week that ended Wednesday of non-event, non-news programming. ABC, which had tremendous boosts from "Dancing With the Stars" as well as the series premiere of "V," was a bit of a distant second with a 6.2/10.

CBS also boasted the highest-rated show of sweeps Week 1 when "NCIS" pulled in an 11.7/18, a good 8 percent ahead of ABC's best showing of "Dancing." While ABC had six shows above the 8.0 household mark compared to the seven from CBS, it suffered significantly with some of its comedies. "The Middle," "Hank" and "Ugly Betty" finished below the 4.0 household mark, while the lowest outing on CBS was "Gary Unmarried" with a 4.3/7.

In fact, CBS has yet to have a show finish below the 4.0 household mark this season while ABC had five programs that low.

CBS had only four of the week's top 10 with "NCIS: Los Angeles" ranked fourth with a 9.5/15, "The Mentalist" in fifth with a 9.4/15 and "CSI" seventh with a 9.0/14.

ABC's new series "V" just made the top 10 edging out "Two and a Half Men" on CBS with an 8.5/13. It's one of the best series premieres of the season so far and provided a small boost to ABC's bottom line. Without "V," ABC would've managed a 6.1/10.

If ABC would've pre-empted shows like "The Middle," "Supernanny" and "Eastwick," it would've finished the week with a 7.1/11, just enough to edge out CBS for the week.

NBC finished third for the week with a 4.0/7 behind decent performances by "The Biggest Loser" and "Law & Order: SVU," both of which had a 5.8/9 and a 5.4/8 respectively. However, two episodes of "The Jay Leno Show" finished below the 3.0 household rating mark that forced NBC's numbers to drop nearly 5 percent by itself.

Fox, which was busy with the World series, aired only two programs during the first week of sweeps -- two episodes of "So You Think You Can Dance," earning a 3.8/6.

The CW, which got its best numbers of the season from "America's Next Top Model," picked up a 1.8/3 to kick off sweeps, slightly ahead of its season so far.
