NBC Says No To New David Tennant Series
Show was meant to be American debut for David Tennant
It looks like David Tennant won't be making his debut on NBC this fall after all.
The Peacock has reportedly turned down the pilot "Rex is Not Your Lawyer," and will not turn the pilot with the former "Doctor Who" star into a series, according to Entertainment Weekly.
That means the sets that were built for the series, which focused on Tennant as a lawyer who preferred to have his clients represent themselves in court with his coaching, didn't pass muster of NBC brass, who have ordered an unprecedented number of pilots this spring to help fill the void created from the cancellation of "The Jay Leno Show."
Tennant had made his way into the United States, looking to find breakthrough success like other recent British actors including Hugh Laurie from "House" on Fox,
"He's just about as big a star as you can get in the States, and he's made it in a role he would never have been given here," Tennant said recently, according to The Daily Telegraph. "But I'm not really thinking, 'Well, they all did it, so I'll do it.' There's no great plan. You just muddle along, and if an opportunity comes up, it would be silly not to take it."
There is a chance the pilot itself could still air, possibly in the fall. But it would be more as a way for NBC to make back money invested in the pilot, and not likely as a backdoor pilot because the actors attached to the show -- including Jerry O'Connell -- will have already been likely released from their contract.
