DeGeneres Drops 'American Idol' As Jennifer Lopez Eyes Seat

Talk show host, comedienne leaves Fox reality show after a single season

Who would've thought Randy Jackson would be the last one standing?

The Hollywood Reporter says talk show host and comedienne Ellen DeGeneres is departing from "American Idol" after spending just a single year in the judge's chair. She may be replaced by Jennifer Lopez, according to The Washington Post, which is quoting several sources, including Deadline.com. However, Fox has not confirmed.

Idol viewers may remember that Lopez made a quite effective mentor several seasons back for "Latin Night."

DeGeneres follows Simon Cowell off the show, which took a bit of a tumble in the ratings this past season.

Fox gave no reason for DeGeneres' departure, but it seems the network might be looking to freshen up the entire judging panel with some fresh faces as a way to inject some life into the show.

DeGeneres, however, said the decision to go was hers.

"A couple months ago, I let Fox and the 'American Idol' producers know that this didn't feel like the right fit for me," DeGeneres said in a statement to People. "I told them I wouldn't leave them in a bind and that I would hold off on doing anything until they were able to figure out where they wanted to take the panel next. It was a difficult decision to make, but my work schedule became more than I bargained for."

"American Idol" remained America's most-watched television series last season, earning a 12.3 rating/19 share average, a good distance ahead of "NCIS" on CBS (averaging an 11.5/18). However, ABC's "Dancing With the Stars" picked up momentum in the spring, even beating the television singing talent contest head-to-head more than once. However, a weaker fall forced "Dancing" to finish in third with a 10.5/16 overnight rating.

What's next for Ellen? Well, she already has a highly successful syndicated talk show that could grow even more with Oprah Winfrey leaving the airwaves.

Many had viewed her inclusion last season more as a way to generate publicity for the show, which worked at first. However, it didn't take long before viewers started to tune out for other programming, especially as Cowell once again retook the spotlight in announcing his own departure from the show.
