Goldblum To Exit 'Criminal Intent'?
Actor's exit could spell the end of the long-running 'Law & Order' Spinoff
For a show that's been on about half as long as the storied "Law & Order" mother ship, "Law & Order: Criminal Intent" has been through almost as many cast changes. Now, one more may spell the end of the series.
Jeff Goldblum, current star, has declared that he wants to leave the show, and that it's not a tactic to get a better salary. His reason for leaving: uncertainty that the show would be picked up for Season 10.
Of course, Goldblum's departure would seem to seal the show's fate, but Deadline Hollywood is reporting a shortened Season 10 may be picked up.
The revolving cast changes at "Criminal Intent" seem to cry out for a "The Big Bang Theory" whiteboard breakdown. For four seasons, Vincent D'Onofrio and Kathryn Erbe were the main detectives. Then D'Onofrio had several fatigue breakdowns on the set, and the show came back for Season 5 with D'Onofiro and Erbe alternating episodes with Chris Noth reprising his original mother ship character, Mike Logan. Noth was paired with several costars, including Annabella Sciorra and Julianne Nicholson.
In the midst of the cast changes, NBC shunted the show off to USA, with reruns on NBC to fill in schedule holes.
In Season 8, Noth decided to leave the show, and Jeff Goldblum, who had been in the running originally to take over the other half, came in. He was paired briefly with Nicholson, who left to have her second child.
Then in Season 9, D'Onofrio and Erbe left, taking with them Eric Bogosian, who had replaced Jamie Sheridan as captain. Saffron Burrows became Goldblum's partner. Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio came in as the new captain. The show was retooled to make it a closer fit with the other USA shows.
Now, Season 10 is in doubt. With Dick Wolf confirming at the recent summer critics' tour that the mother ship is gone for good, "Criminal Intent" being canceled is one more loss to the "Law & Order" brand.
