TV Looking Glass: Comic-Con 2010 Offers Treasure Trove Of Loot, Secrets (Part 2)

And some incredible sneak-peeks of exclusive behind-the-scenes footage

As promised in part 1 of this article, Comic-Con 2010 provided an extraordinary opportunity to get the behind-the-scenes scoop on a whole array of upcoming films and television shows.

As day 3 dawned, it was Saturday -- the biggest day yet with over 140,000 people vying for a select number of panels and presentations. By far, the one that everyone was desperate to get into was the "Chuck" panel in Ballroom 20. Despite being able to hold 4,500 people, when there is 4 times that number of fans jostling for a place in line to get in the room, there are going to be some broken hearts.

Not to be overshadowed by the likes of "Tron" or "Hawaii 5-0," the cast and creators of "Chuck" knew exactly how to bring the house down. Nothing beats a live performance by the infamous band Jeffster and for the second consecutive year, they showed up in fine form. With a sizzling hot video, capped off by a rousing live conclusion by Vik Sahay, Scott Krinsky and the rest of the cast, the audience was on its feet cheering them on to sounds of Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance." It was a performance that must be seen to be believed and for the fans, it was the crowning moment of Comic-Con.

Due to unusually tight scheduling that day, horror upon horrors, the panel was cut-short before the audience Q&A commenced. There was an audible gasp as both the fans and the cast realized that their time together was ending all too soon. The cast did not show up just to wave at their fans and the fans did not wait upwards of 3 hours in line just to hear that the next panel would be starting and essentially kicking "Chuck" out of the room. It was shocking and appalling. (Some management's head is going to roll for that scheduling fiasco!)

Cut loose, it was a mad-rush to try to get into the next panel. Fortunately, not many had heard of the upcoming new NBC series "The Event," so we managed to get in the room just in time for the special screening of the upcoming series premiere episode. While not sure what the show is about, the last 5 minutes were surprising enough to have the audience hooked and there were cheers at the end. From what can be gathered, the show involves a mysterious group of detainees that the government is anxious to forget even exists -- a group that a new president wants to release as a gesture of good faith. However, there are perhaps good reasons for this unusual group of individuals being detained. Is it for their protection or ours?

Suffice it to say, the pilot episode starts off innocuously enough and continues to build to a point where you too will nearly jump out of your seat. As the lights rose and the all-star cast was brought out for a quick Q&A, it was again shocking that the tight scheduling only allowed them 5 minutes for the Q&A itself. Like the cast of "Chuck," I am sure that actors such as Blair Underwood, Laura Innes, Zeljko Ivanek and Jason Ritter did not make the 3 hour trek to San Diego just to spend 5 minutes before their prospective fan-base. The abbreviated panel left everyone feeling unsatisfied and milling around looking for a panel where it would not be truncated by the ridiculous scheduling constraints of the organizers.

This was an opportune time to see what amazing discoveries were to be found in the Exhibit Hall, which proved quite fortuitous. A quick perusal of the book vendor tables led to a remarkable meeting with upcoming sci-fi author Charles Yu. His soon to-be-released book "How To Live Safely in a Science Fictional Universe" was eye-catching and stopped me right in my tracks. Who could resist a book with such a fun title and an equally fascinating book cover? I could not. The author himself was a delight to chat with as he shared the inspiration for the story about a time machine mechanic who embarks on an extraordinary journey. (More about Mr. Yu and his awesome book can be read here).

Nearly intoxicated with visions of time machines dancing around my brain, I barely had enough time to rush back up to Ballroom 20 for the spectacular presentation for the ABC series "V." Like many other shows with the foresight to bring their entire cast, "V" brought all its glittering stars. The ballroom was standing room only and breathless to hear any little secrets the cast and creators were willing to share. In the fun news, the announcement that Charles Mesure was joining the show as a series regular for the upcoming season was by far one of the cooler scoops of the day. For any good drama needs an ambiguous character which the audience is never quite sure is on the side of the good guys or the villains -- and Charles Mesure's character Kyle Hobbes is definitely an enigma. It will be fascinating to see what his mercurial character does next. Another character that has everyone riveted is Morena Baccarin's Anna. There is much speculation as to exactly how she will seek her retribution for the death of her children, but like a chill of death hovering at the door, we all know its coming. Morena looked positively radiant knowing that she gets to play such a deliciously evil character. The rest of the cast worked hard at not giving away too much about what's upcoming, but suffice it to say -- the war between humans and V's is imminent.

Next up were the back-to-back panels for the CW's hot new spy drama "Nikita" and Fox's roaring adventure "Human Target." The "Nikita" panel also treated the fans to a special screening of its pilot which had everyone on the edges of their seats for the entire 42 minutes. Once the lights rose, there was an awestruck hush across the room, which lasted only until Maggie Q and Lyndsy Fonseca got up on stage. Then the room erupted with a volcanic buzz as everyone wanted to know more about this incredible new show.

Following this electrifying panel, it seemed as if "Human Target" would not be able to compete in the limelight, but as soon as Mark Valley, Chi McBride and Jackie Earle Haley got talking, there was nothing quiet about this panel. They were ecstatic to be there amongst their fans and the fans were loving every second of the energized Q&A. As the panel ended, it was hard to say who was more reluctant to leave, the fans or the cast. But like everything wonderful at Comic-Con, it always ends too soon.

As day three concluded, it was with visions of sugar plums dancing in everyone's minds. Sunday would be the fourth and final day and there were still a few super panels ahead.

Sunday was a day of conflicting panels and emotions. It was a choice between going to see Smallville-Supernatural-Glee versus Castle-Merlin-Unnatural History. For many, the choice was agonizing. But aiming for the rarer experience -- one that may not come along again -- I opted to attend the Castle-Merlin-Unnatural History panels, and was not disappointed. On the contrary, I practically floated on a cloud of pure bliss the entire day.

While Nathan Fillion is certainly no stranger to the world of Comic-Con given his extensive background working with Joss Whedon on "Firefly," it was the first time that the rest of the cast of "Castle" had made the trek and they looked positively gleeful to be there. It was a mutual love-fest between the talent and fans -- and it didn't hurt when Nathan and Stana Katic read aloud from the book based on the series "Heat Wave." That steamy scene reading nearly had fans melting in their seats!

Not to be over shown, next up was the "Merlin" panel with Colin Morgan and Anthony Head (a.k.a., Giles for all the screaming "Buffy, the Vampire Slayer" fans). It was "Merlin's" first year at Comic-Con too and it was a panel of awestruck faces on both sides of the table. Colin Morgan and Anthony Head were like giddy children at Disneyland. The 4,000 mile flight from the U.K. must have been brutal, but they braved it for those wondrous minutes with the diehard fans. It was a pleasure to hear them happily share their excitement at meeting their fans and how amazing it is that the show has taken off on a global scale. Plus, the blooper reel they brought was hysterical!

Last, but not least, was the panel with the cast and creator of "Unnatural History." The show about a trio of teenagers who inadvertently stumble across historical mysteries that intersect with their daily lives has become a breakout summer sensation on the Cartoon Network. Having met the delightful cast during a quick press interview, the secret to their success was immediately apparent: they are all incredibly gracious and charming. They are also clearly having a ball working on the show and that enthusiasm comes across on screen. It provides a level of infectiousness that welcomes the fans and makes "Unnatural History" appointment television.

It was with heavy hearts and sadness as the last panel ended. It was like the clock striking midnight in the Cinderella fairy-tale. It was time for the ball to end and everyone returned to their everyday lives. The five day adventure had come and gone swiftly, but it also left an indelible imprint on the hearts and minds of the fans. No one was going to forget all the magnificent sneak-peeks, juicy tid-bits or other jaw-dropping revelations. It had whet everyone's appetite for the upcoming Fall season of television and sparked interest in a series of films and other upcoming entertainment pursuits. Comic-Con's mission was accomplished. Until next year . . .
