'Sherlock' Star Keen For New And Old Stories

Benedict Cumberbatch hopes for original canon to be fused with new ideas

BBC's "Sherlock" series received rave reviews when it premiered in the UK during the summer, and the British terrestrial channel has now commissioned a second season that will continue where the last mind blowing adventure left off.

Leading man Benedict Cumberbatch, who was allegedly offered the role of Doctor Who before Matt Smith, is keen to see another mash-up of new ideas and familiar elements from the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle stories. As a contemporary telling of the crime-fighting detective of Baker Street, "Sherlock's" first season included established characters and plot devices against the backdrop of modern day London.

"I'd love Irene Adler to crop up," Cumberbatch said. "I'd [also] love 'The Hound of the Baskervilles' to crop up. There's all sorts of things that I'd love to do, or characters that I'd love to be involved."

With that in mind, he also insists that he would like to see these existing concepts taken forward into unchartered territory ... much like making Moriarty something of a trigger happy terrorist was in the first season.

"Some of the plot borrowings and deductions, the characters, their relationships and the detail of their lives is very much drawn from the original because there would be no point [in] messing with what ain't broke," he said. "But as far as adventures go, I think they can definitely take it into a new realm."

Four 90-minute episodes were filmed for the first season, with the first being a pilot episode that was never aired. The episode is expected to be included on the upcoming DVD release. The second season is expected to include another three 90-minute episodes and will air at some point in 2011 on BBC One in the UK.
