The Original Danno From 'Hawaii Five-0' Dies
James MacArthur passes away, last of the original series' main cast
For 11 years, he was told by Jack Lord to "Book 'em, Danno." And now Hollywood is mourning his passing.
James MacArthur died Oct. 26 at the age of 72, although it wasn't released where he died or his cause of death.
MacArthur got his big break in 1967 on Leonard Freeman's "Hawaii Five-0" for CBS, playing Det. Danno Williams. Freeman, the creator of the show that was recently remade by CBS, remembered MacArthur from the Clint Eastwood film "Hang 'Em High," which MacArthur had a cameo in, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
MacArthur had been retired from television for about a dozen years since playing Frank del Rio in the 1998 television movie "Storm Chasers: Revenge of the Twister." Following the end of "Hawaii Five-0" in 1979, he took on a career of character acting and guest appearances including two stops at "Fantasy Island" in 1981, "Murder, She Wrote" in 1984, and four appearances on "The Love Boat" before making one last appearance in a television movie version of "Hawaii Five-0" in 1997 where he played Gov. Dan Williams.
Dan Williams is now played by Scott Caan in the CBS remake, with "Book 'em, Danno" a part of the new show (but not as happily accepted by the character as in the original. That show is averaging a 7.3 rating/12 share, according to Fast National ratings from The Nielsen Media Co., and is television's No. 1 new show this season, although it's been challenged in recent weeks by both the comedy "Mike & Molly" and the Friday cop drama "Blue Bloods" with Tom Selleck.
Few of the original show's main cast are still alive today. In fact, MacArthur is the last of the primary cast to survive.
Jack Lord, who played Steve McGarrett in the original, died in 1998 of congestive heart failure at the age of 77. Kam Fong, who played Chin-Ho Kelly, died in 2002 at the age of 84 of lung cancer.
Herman Wedemeyer, who played Duke Lukela in the series, died in 1999 at the age of 74. Zulu, who played Kono in the original series, died in 2004 at the age of 66.
All of them died in Hawaii, where many made their home in later years.
MacArthur is survived by his wife, four children and seven great-grandchildren. Services will be held in Honolulu.
