SmallvilleExecs Now Tackling Charlies Angels
More mystery, less campness for new ABC series
They re-invented Superman for the small screen, and now they have another iconic series in their sights ... Charlies Angels.
Former Smallville executive producers Al Gough and Miles Miller have been tapped to develop a new adaptation of Charlies Angels for ABCs 2011 line-up. Apparently, both ABC and Sony Studios have been keen for a remake of the original for a while and are looking to transform the classic - and somewhat dated - series into the next big hit.
At one point, former Lost creator Carlton Cuse was involved in re-creating the series, as was Josh Freidman (who previously helmed Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles). A pilot script was even put together but in the end the show was never pushed into production. However, Sony then approached both Gough and Miller and the duo pitched their idea on how to make the franchise fresh and new again.
How do you make it relevant for todays audiences? Gough told Hollywood Insider. Miles and I believe we figured out a way to do that. We pitched it to our partners Leonard Goldberg, Drew Barrymore and Nancy Juvonen, who have been the caretakers of this franchise, and they really liked it. More importantly, ABC got excited about it.
And, to make this series unique, theyre taking it to Miami.
Sun and surf are in the Charlies AngelsDNA, Gough said. But we didnt want to revisit Los Angeles, since that was done in both the original TV series and the movie series.
But, if you liked the incarnations of the franchise that have come before, you may not recognize this new series when it finally makes its debut. Aside from the characters and name, this series will be made of more substantial storytelling with a deep rooted mystery: what is Charlie hiding?
It wont be campy or retro, Gough said. The characters are real and emotionally grounded, but they still like to have fun, wear great clothes, solve crime and kick some serious ass. There are three new angels and one mysterious Charlie—and hes still on the box, not skyping or teleconferencing.
Although the series wont be airing until 2011, the show is already well into pre-production with casting taking place for the newest Angels.
The timetable is NOW, he said. Seriously, we started this week with our casting director John Papsidera (The Dark Knight,Inception). We now have the arduous task of seeing hundreds of potential Angels.
