CBS Takes Care Of Top, NBC Handles Bottom

Ratings war this season isn't much of a fight

If anyone is going to catch CBS in the ratings race this season, they better start sprinting, and fast.

CBS won its seventh ratings week in the row, and once again quite easily over second-place ABC, thanks to a strong new show lineup, plus its venerable veteran lineup that seems to be invincible to competition.

But then there's NBC. Half of its programming lineup this week ended up at the bottom of the ratings heap, when you remove The CW from the equation, showing that recovery there likely won't happen this year.

"School Pride," a short-run series showcasing the renovation of schools, is the Big Four's least-watched program of the week (once again), tied with "The Good Guys" on Fox. Both shows air on Friday, so there's always that argument. However, as if CBS couldn't do any better than it already is, the network has shown that Friday is not a lost cause of a night. "Blue Bloods" was the top new show for the second week in a row, the Tom Selleck vehicle up 45 percent from what CBS did in that late Friday timeslot the year before.

Also on the worst list is "The Apprentice," which hardly has the push and excitement generated by the celebrity version of the Donald Trump reality show. In fact, "The Jay Leno Show" did far better in the timeslot last year than "The Apprentice" could ever hope to achieve, showing that Jay Leno was hardly the worst thing NBC could put in that timeslot.

NBC also has two new shows on the bottom list -- "Chase" on Mondays and "Outsourced" on Thursdays. Both are in the low 3.0 household ratings, and could possibly see limited life in future seasons.

In terms of new shows, CBS continues to lead the way, but which show from the network will end up on top is the big question. With "Blue Bloods" winning its second week in a row, "Hawaii Five-0" has fallen behind the network's two new comedies -- "$#*! My Dad Says" and "Mike & Molly." However, the Alex O'Loughlin series remains the top new show of the fall ... for now.

"Detroit 1-8-7" is performing well for ABC, which has grown its audience over the last three weeks despite tough competition from CBS' "The Good Wife," a top 10 show.

Fast Nationals usually provide a snapshot of what Americans are watching by pulling numbers from the top urban markets that include both live viewing and same-day timeshifted viewing. A rating point generally represents more than 1.1 million households while the share indicates the percentage of televisions turned on that was tuned to the specific program. These numbers typically shift when final ratings are issued.
