Fox To CBS: We Have Top DVR Show, Not You
Networks battle over title of 'most played back show'
CBS look set to become the champions when it comes to the ratings race for primetime television, and over the last few weeks one show in particular has been receiving considerable support from the network.
The remake of "Hawaii Five-0" has not only been highlighted as the biggest hit of the season but it has also been advertised as the "most played back show" when it comes to DVR figures. However, Fox are contesting that statement and insist that the "Glee" holds that title.
"They have every right to make a claim, but it has to be right," Fox scheduling chief Preston Beckman said. "They can say 'Hawaii Five-0' has more viewing after the day of the initial telecast. But they're claiming more people DVR Hawaii than any other show and that's not true. It's 'Glee.' We just wanted to set the record straight."
However, there is now also debate on how those figures are calculated and how they should be calculated.
Apparently, CBS are reporting that "Hawaii Five-0" wins when comparing the difference between live-plus-same-day ratings (i.e. the ratings the episode gained on the day it aired) and live-plus-7-day ratings (the number of views the episode gained in the following 7 days).
Fox on the other hand are counting live-plus-same-day playback from the night of the premiere up until 3 a.m., meaning that if you compare all DVR recordings on their own with live viewership then "Glee" does have more views than "Hawaii Five-0."
What does CBS have to say about it? Simple: that's not how it works.
"No one measures it that way, although we can certainly see why they want to," a source said, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
