Most Popular Show In World: 'CSI'
PLUS: 'Criminal Minds' struggling to bring everyone back
CBS has the most popular scripted show in both America and the world -- except they are two entirely different shows.
"CSI" was named the world's most-watched program for the fourth time in six years, winning the prestigious International Television Audience Award for a Drama at the Monte Carlo TV Festival. All of that despite the most-watched drama in America is not "CSI," but instead "NCIS."
In average overnight ratings, "NCIS" averaged an 11.7 rating/19 share, a 2.1 percent audience growth over the year before, and good for third overall behind "American Idol" on Fox (12.7/20) and "Dancing With the Stars" on ABC (11.9/18).
"CSI" finished in the top 10 domestically, despite an 11 percent audience loss, to finish No. 8 with an 8.1/13. In fact, among the shows that did better than "CSI" besides "NCIS" were "The Mentalist," "Two and a Half Men" and "Criminal Minds." All of those shows, coincidentally, are on CBS.
The international data is based on Eurodata TV Worldwide, and tracks audience viewership over five continents. It's not exactly clear what the international appeal is for the show, but it has endeared those audiences and they've stayed loyal to it for years despite some very heavy competition.
One franchise that didn't have a picturesque year this past season was "Criminal Minds." First, its highly anticipated spinoff was cancelled after just a single season due to lackluster ratings. But now the parent CBS program itself is having issues bringing all of its people back.
Thomas Gibson, who plays Aaron Hotchner on the series, has yet to sign a new contract to return to the show. Despite the stalled contracts, co-star Joe Mantegna said he's confident Gibson will return, according to TV Line.
"I feel confident about it," Mantegna said. "They'll work it out. It'll all be what it'll be."
Yet, TV Line did warn that Mantegna does not exactly have the clearest crystal ball when it comes to actor fates on the show. He also said Paget Brewster would return as Emily Prentiss this last season, but he couldn't have been more wrong.
"Criminal Minds" finished the season with an 8.2 rating/13 share in average Fast National overnight ratings from The Nielsen Co., finishing at No. 7 overall. It lost a little more than 2 percent of its audience from the previous year.
