ABC Orders Full Season Of New Shows
'Once Upon a Time,' 'Last Man Standing' get votes of confidence
The ratings have been good, as well as the buzz. And it looks like ABC may have a couple new hits on its hands.
The Disney-owned network has given full-season orders to "Once Upon a Time" and "Last Man Standing," both of which came out of the gate strong and retained a vast majority of its premiere audience in later weeks. Also getting a green light for an entire season is "Happy Endings," which has been television's hottest show.
Getting a nudge of approval was the new series "Pan-Am," which has now lost nearly half its audience, but still trying to stay above the clouds on Sunday night. ABC has ordered additional scripts, but not the episodes that go with them. That buys ABC some time to decide whether to spend more money on the show.
"Once Upon a Time" premiered Oct. 23 with a 7.4 rating/11 share, according to Fast National overnight ratings from The Nielsen Co. It dipped just 8 percent going into its second week, but remains ABC's top-rated Sunday program ahead of "Desperate Housewives" and "Pan-Am."
"Pan-Am" had a similar debut Sept. 25, but lost 31 percent of its audience in its second week, and has been bleeding viewers ever since. Its most recent outing was a 3.8/6, dropping its season average to a 4.7/8. That's nearly 10 percent lower than what ABC did in the timeslot last year.
"Last Man Standing," starring Tim Allen, premiered to an 8.1/12 on Oct. 11. It did slip 21 percent in its second week, but it's been holding steady ever since, averaging a 6.9/11. That's nowhere near enough to beat "NCIS" on CBS, but it did beat (and later tie) Fox's "The X Factor," and also made easy work of "Glee" on Nov. 1. NBC's "The Biggest Loser" has been no competition at all.
"Happy Endings" is averaging a 4.7/7 so far this season, losing 41 percent of its "Modern Family" lead-in, but still nearly 60 percent better than last season.
