CBS Takes 'Survivor' To 26 Seasons (13 Years)
Jeff Probst will return, despite plans for new talk show
It's the grand-daddy of reality shows, and CBS wants more. A lot more.
"Survivor" was renewed through the 2012-13 season, meaning it will get at least 26 installments under its belt with room for it to continue beyond that. That will bring "Survivor" to 13 years since it debuted in 2000, all of them looked over by host and executive producer Jeff Probst.
How he will manage island duties and his new syndicated talk show are logistics that have probably already been worked out. But the announcement of that talk show did create some speculation that Probst may not return to do more "Survivor," rumors CBS shot down quite quickly with its renewal.
"Survivor" this season has averaged a 6.6 rating/10 share, according to Fast National overnight ratings from The Nielsen Co. Through the end of October, those numbers were down 3 percent from the year before, but remained in the Top 25 television shows overall, and the 18th highest-rated show on CBS.
At least this season (and through the end of October), it's television's third-highest-rated reality series behind "Dancing With the Stars" on ABC (10.2/15) and fellow CBS program "Amazing Race" (6.6/10). It has remained ahead of the new Fox television show "The X Factor," which is averaging a 6.4/10, good for No. 27.
The closest any other non-scripted shows are rating to "Survivor" are "Extreme Makeover" and "America's Funniest Home Videos" on ABC, tied at No. 47 with a 3.8/6.
While "Survivor" might be down compared to last year, it's beating its Wednesday timeslot by 10 percent over last year.
Season 24 is set to premiere Feb. 15. But we're getting ahead of ourselves. Season 23 of "Survivor" airs Wednesdays at 8 p.m. on CBS, with its mid-season break expected to hit in December.
