Fox Pulls 'Glee' From Post-Sweeps Schedule
Faltering ratings starting to have effect on show's treatment
Is the luster gone from "Glee"?
Ratings are down significantly this season, and it seems that has really got the attention of Fox.
The network has pulled "Glee" off the schedule for all of March and the beginning of April. Instead, it plans to air some of its new comedies, including the struggling "I Hate My Teenage Daughter" and the return of the once-cancelled "Breaking In."
Fox didn't give reasons for the move, outside of trying something different (and allowing for a repeat-less final stretch). But while there is little doubt the show will receive a fourth season, it looks like more changes might be needed for the future.
"Glee" will conclude its winter run on Feb. 21 but then return again April 10, where it's expected to air straight through to May.
The show has averaged a 4.7 rating/7 share through the end of January, according to Fast National overnight ratings from The Nielsen Co. That's down 30 percent from last year, when it was Fox's No. 1 scripted program behind "American Idol." Now, however, it's tied for No. 6 overall, and is fourth among scripted programs. It's tied (through January) with "Napoleon Dynamite" and "Terra Nova," and behind the preview of "Touch," "Alcatraz" and "Bones."
Not even a special guest appearance by Ricky Martin could make much of a dent in the ratings. Tuesday's episode garnered a 4.7/7, down 13 percent from its Michael Jackson tribute episode the week before. However, that episode is in-line with what "Glee" has been doing this season.
Fox is hoping that blocking comedy a little differently will help give a boost to "Raising Hope," a comedy it has not made a secret its love for, but one that has not won over viewers. It's averaging a 3.2/5 so far this year, but that's down 13 percent from last year.
"I Hate My Teenage Daughter" aired a small handful of episodes, and has been doing slightly better in its first season, averaging a 3.5/6, and ranked No. 65 overall.
"New Girl" is pulling in a 4.6/7, and is ranked No. 17 among new shows and just inside the Top 50 overall.
The biggest news in this new schedule is "Breaking In," the Christian Slater comedy that had been cancelled at one time by Fox, but then pushed back into the schedule. It's cancellation was a bit of a mystery anyway, since it was Fox's No. 8 program last year, and No. 50 overall, with a 4.2/7 average.
"Glee" currently airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET on Fox.
