Brits Invade 'America's Next Top Model'

Reality competition show changes it up to try and win back viewers

"America's Next Top Model" desperately needs some kind of a ratings boost, and it might just find it with a touch of international flavor.

When the next cycle of the Tyra Banks-hosted show premieres Feb. 29, it will not only have your typical American ladies, but it's adding some British competitors as well.

It's called "British Invasion," and it will mix both Americans and Brits to find out who will make it big in the red white and blue.

Among the 14 contestants are seven from England and Scotland. The other half comes from around the United States, including New York, Wisconsin, Washington, Texas, Oregon and Georgia.

"Top Model" was once the one program The CW could depend on each year to bring in decent audiences. But that hasn't been the case this year. It's averaging a 1.2 rating/2 share in Fast National overnight ratings from The Nielsen Co., down 23 percent from last year. In fact, it's year-over-year numbers are the worst of all the returning shows on The CW, but not by much. "Nikita," "Supernatural" and "Gossip Girl" have all also lost more than 20 percent of their audience from last year as well.

That has dropped "Top Model" to The CW's No. 3 show (tied with three others), and No. 3 overall. Through the end of January, it's finishing behind "Vampire Diaries" (1.9/3), "The Secret Circle" (1.4/2) and "Ringer" (1.2/2), although "Ringer" has not returned to very good numbers in February.

Along with the regular judging crew of Kelly Cutrone, Nigel Barker, Jay Manuel and Miss J. Alexander, there will be a slew of guest judges. They include Kelly Osbourne, Estelle, Georgina Chapman and Nicholas Tse.

This is the 18th cycle of the show which first premiered in May 2003 on what was then UPN, a forerunner of The CW. It airs Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET.
