'NCIS' Dominates Singing Programs

'American Idol' staying ahead of 'The Voice'

The battle may be more interesting between two singing competition shows: Fox's "American Idol" and NBC's "The Voice." But the real king remains "NCIS" on CBS, which is not only television's No. 1 scripted program, but television's No. 1 program overall.

"The Voice" is holding on to its Super Bowl-boosted audience, and with that, is putting up a serious challenge to "American Idol." So much that there are only so many viewers to go around, and once ABC starts up "Dancing With the Stars" again, there's going to be a question on who will end up on top, and who might be left out in the cold.

Not to suggest that any of these three shows will be cancelled. Far from it. In fact, no matter who ends up in third place, it will likely remain one of the top five programs on television, which means it only loses a little bit of its bragging rights.

In fact, "The Voice" will be a huge win for NBC no matter what. Yet, that's the good news. The bad news is that no other shows on NBC's faltering schedule seem to be getting any help from it. That includes its new and highly marketed new series "Smash," which slipped in the ratings.

"Smash" earned a 5.2 rating/8 share this past week, down 29 percent from its premiere. It's still well ahead of anything else NBC has tried in that slot (or really in most of its other timeslots), but such a drop is not encouraging.

Even with two episodes of "The Voice" in the top 10, NBC is back to its usual role of being television's No. 4 network, finishing 14 percent lower than third-place ABC. Fox, with "American Idol" at its side (and a couple extra episodes of that show) rocketed up to second place with a 4.7/7. However, that was 36 percent lower than CBS, which won its 22nd out out 23 weeks.

Many shows were down from the typical episodes, including "NCIS," which lost an entire ratings point -- or 8 percent of its audience -- from the previous week. However, many of those shows are expected to rebound this week.

On CBS, "A Gifted Man" seems to be doing slightly better in a new timeslot, with "Undercover Boss" as a lead-in. The show was moved back an hour, filling "CSI: New York's" timeslot for now, and pulled in a 6.1/10. That was up 5 percent from the previous week in its old timeslot. However, it was also down 5 percent from what "CSI: NY" was doing in that timeslot earlier this season.

Still, that might help keep "Gifted Man" in sights for a second season. Although it's in television's Top 35, it's still one of CBS' lowest-rated programs, ahead of only the cancelled "How to be a Gentleman."

"Modern Family" was ABC's top show this week with a 6.8/10 while "American Idol" dominated Fox with an 11.1/17. "The Voice" was the winner for NBC with a 9.7/14 as "NCIS" once again ruled CBS with an 11.7/19. "Vampire Diaries," as usual, led The CW with a 1.9/3.

All the networks were down this week compared to last year, except for NBC, which was up 15 percent from its 3.3 household rating a year ago.

CBS continues to lead all networks overall this season with a 7.6/12 followed by ABC with a 5.6/9, Fox with a 4.6/7, NBC with a 3.5/6 and The CW with a 1.2/2.

Fast Nationals usually provide a snapshot of what Americans are watching by pulling numbers from the top urban markets that include both live viewing and same-day timeshifted viewing. A rating point generally represents more than 1.1 million households while the share indicates the percentage of televisions turned on that was tuned to the specific program. These numbers typically shift when final ratings are issued.
